EdTech: Learn how educational technology affect your child’s learning

These days, educational technology has become increasingly popular as almost everyone can use technological and digital devices at their fingertips.

In the educational environment, although the software application of these devices can facilitate young student’s learning process, it may also be likely to have some drawbacks.

Positive impacts of EdTech on children learning

  • Learning pace customization: Because each student has a different learning method, even when they are classified into logical, spatial, visual learners, their learning progress, and even learning outcome is not the same. Hence, there is an emergence of multiple adaptive learning programs tailored to allow them to learn at their own pace, which helps them absorb new knowledge more quickly and effectively.
  • Interaction and engagement boost: Young children are curious by nature, and they love something vivid and new. Thus, integrating the lessons with exciting online tasks like digital storytelling projects and gamification is a perfect way to engage them. For instance, when kids are engrossed in educational games, they will find learning difficult subjects more engaging and traditional boring lessons more intriguing.
  • Technological skills improvement: When partaking in e-learning or a virtual classroom, kids are given the opportunities to learn how to improve their technical skills. For example, they have to know how to receive and turn in assignments online, search for online resources for their projects, or deal with the technical challenges during their digital learning. Indeed, these skills are essential for their success in this emerging digital world.

Negative impacts of EdTech on children learning

  • Potential distractions: Despite many valuable educational resources, the Internet also hides several distractive tools. As usual, kids are tempted to play with these distractive games or software instead of focusing on their learning tasks. The e-learning efficiency might not be ensured without useful filtering devices and other controlling methods from their parents and teachers.
  • Reduced socialization: EdTech is causing a lack of accountability since students are just “names” to their teachers. It might be impossible for young learners to have face-to-face interactions as many as they meet and communicate directly with their teachers. This shortage of socialization may hinder many young learners from achieving the best academic performance and developing essential soft skills.
  • Possible cheating: There seems to be a downside of EdTech when it comes to tests and exams. Young learners nowadays are more familiar with technology to cheat during tests or assignments easily. This may result in an inaccurate assessment of their learning outcomes or academic performances without teachers’ software tools to control students.

Final Thought

In a nutshell, there are pros and cons of EdTech that are changing how children absorb knowledge. To take full advantage of its upsides and minimize its downsides, parents and teachers should work together to find how educational technology is most effectively exploited. Therefore, the young generations will be better educated in this digital world.
